GISC Costa Rica Ball Donation - July 2011

Thank you to Grand Island Soccer Club for the once again donating balls to the Costa Rica Soccer Mission Trip. Balls were given to individual boys, as well as to the head coach for his team. 80 bags of food were also donated. GISC Presidents Corner - July 2011

July 9th & 10th, we kicked off the 2011 house soccer season, and it was great to see the Veterans Park soccer fields bustling with activity. Last year, we received parent feedback on the house games and the single biggest concern was ensuring that the games are fun for all of the players. We want to make sure that everyone understands the difference between travel soccer, which is competitive and house soccer, which is fun. It is a huge difference, and for parents and coaches whose children have only had the opportunity to play house soccer, this may not be as evident in this stage of their sons or daughters soccer experience.

We want to get the message out early to everyone that the Club has taken some steps to address your concerns. Our Club initiatives were to re-institute the house draft to try to create more balanced teams, provide more coaching education to our house coaches so they have the tools to be successful at managing the game and the players, and to increase our parent education and awareness to help the parents recognize our “fun” focus for the kids and enjoy the experience along with their kids.

I came across a series of articles that we used to distribute to our house coaches a number of years ago that I feel are a great way to get our message out (pdf article). Over the summer months we will provide these to you to read and our hope is that it will provide you some insight in to the Club’s philosophy on house soccer.

Thanks for all you do for our kids!

Rom Figler, Grand Island Soccer Club President.

About Us - GISC

The game of Soccer, is undoubtedly one of the most popular sports in the world, and it is ranked amongst the fastest growing sports, for boys and girls, all across America.

Grand Island Soccer Club was formed in 1979, with the objective of promoting the increasingly popular game of soccer to the youth of Grand Island, NY. The club has grown consistently over the years, and now boasts a strong 'Travel League' with 22 teams, and an extremely popular 'House League' with over 1000 players in 80 active teams.

We encourage you to read our Mission, check out who works in what capacity to help make the club a success (Club Personnel), attend a Board Meeting, see who has received Scholarships & Awards and enjoy some photographs in our Gallery.

We hope you find this website helpful. If you have any questions or need help to get your child playing soccer, please feel free to Contact Us.

GISC House Soccer League

Grand Island Soccer Club has a diverse grass-roots program. Young children can learn beginner / entry level soccer skills in the U6 level of the House League, which is co-ed for all teams and runs for youth of all ages up through High School. The emphasis at House level is on learning the game, having fun, and building good sportsmanship.

General questions about House soccer, please contact the House Coordinator at house@gisoccerclub.org

GISC Travel Soccer League

The Travel League supports a more competitive level of play. Players may be chosen to participate on a team according to their skill level, age, and gender - rather than by simple application to play. GISC Travel teams take part in the Buffalo & Western New York Junior Soccer League (BWNYJSL) under the New York State West Youth Soccer Association (NYSWYSA), and play against other Soccer Clubs throughout Western New York.

Grand Island Soccer Club is a non-profit soccer club that depends entirely on the service of volunteers for it’s success. The club's 44 dedicated volunteer coaches are certified through BWNYSA. If your child is interested in starting to play soccer at the House League level, or developing their skills to play at the Travel League level, please read on to find out more about Grand Island Soccer Club, then Contact Us to register your child.
